Parents No Longer Ask the Shelf — They Ask the AI

The first weeks of parenthood are a research marathon: the first stroller, the right formula, a safe car seat. These decisions are emotionally and financially heavy, with no tolerance for the wrong pick. Today the parent asks the same question directly to ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity — and the model does not list dozens of options; it names three to five brands and closes the subject. We measured who makes that shortlist: 10 unbranded questions, three models, 30 answers.

01 / METHODOLOGY

Ten unbranded questions, three models, zero steering

The goal was to sit as close to real parent behaviour as possible: the questions span the category end to end, and none contains a brand name or a leading phrase.

QUESTION SET

Ten categories, all unbranded

Diapers, formula, strollers, bottles, skincare, car seats, maternity and nursing, organic babywear, high chairs and retail.

MODELS

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini

The same questions were asked of three generative models at once, so each answer could be read comparatively.

MEASUREMENT

Recommendation frequency and category breadth

Brands named in each answer were extracted and counted by answer frequency and category breadth.

VALIDATION

Consensus across all three models

A brand on one model can be coincidence; a brand on all three points to a consistent trace across the web.

02 / CRITICAL FINDINGS

The ranking is the outcome; the pattern is the strategy

In safety-driven categories, global brands win

Strollers, car seats and bottles favour names carrying certification, testing and reputation verified across many sources.

Local, certified brands beat the giants in the right niche

In organic babywear, clear and verifiable GOTS, OEKO-TEX and organic-cotton signals bring local specialists forward.

There is one answer to 'where do I buy this'

Asked about retail, all three models converged on ebebek; within one sector, one category can be a door and the next a wall.

Appearing on all three models is the most durable visibility

The recurring brand sets in diapers, formula and strollers show why single-model visibility is fragile.

03 / THE RANKING

The 10 brands AI recommends most in baby & maternity

Across all 30 answers Chicco stood clear, and was also the most versatile brand, appearing in seven categories.

04 / THE CATEGORY BREAKDOWN

Every aisle has its own leader

Ten categories, different leaders and different evidence thresholds.

Diapers → Prima

Prima, Sleepy, Molfix and Baby Turco were named on all three models.

Formula → Aptamil

Aptamil, SMA, HiPP, Bebelac and Evolvia repeat consistently.

Strollers → Cybex

Cybex, Bugaboo, Maxi-Cosi and Joie form the highest-consensus cluster.

Bottles → Philips Avent

Philips Avent and Dr. Brown's pair up, with Chicco alongside.

Skincare → Mustela

Dermatological approval and sensitive-skin evidence are decisive.

Car seats → Cybex

Test and certification signals lead alongside Britax Römer and BeSafe.

Maternity and nursing → LC Waikiki, DeFacto

Local retail leads apparel; Lansinoh leads nursing products.

Organic babywear → The Nest Kids

The category where local brands beat global giants.

High chairs → Chicco

One of the categories carrying Chicco's seven-category breadth.

Retail → ebebek

All three models' common answer to 'where do I buy this'.

Ranking on page one was an advantage; in AI, being inside the answer is almost the only chance. The three to five names on that list become the parent’s final options — everything else turns invisible.
